What if an ultrasound device is the size of a human palm? This portability will make it easier to conduct assessments in any setting without mobility limitations.

Telefield Medical Imaging Limited, a medical equipment manufacturing company, is making this a reality with the world’s first portable ultrasound scoliosis assessment system, Scolioscan Air.

Scolioscan Air is ultra-light and easy to use, taking the 3D ultrasound scoliosis assessment a notch higher with convenient and flexible imaging in a handheld device. Due to its utility and portability, it has a wide range of applications in different settings, from monitoring in primary hospitals and clinics to screening in schools and healthcare centers.

Even before the launch of Scolioscan Air, Telefield had already taken the spine assessment domain by storm with Scolioscan. It integrates 3D electromagnetic tracking technology with ultrasound imaging to collect images of a full spine for detecting the location and orientation of vertebrae.

This can be used to track and measure the severity of scoliotic deformity in different planes with accurate results. Scolioscan can also provide muscle-related information in 3D for a better understanding of scoliosis progression and nonsurgical treatment outcomes.

“Moreover, our technology is radiation-free 3D ultrasonic imaging, which makes the assessment much safer, and fills the void between scoliometer and X-ray assessments,” says Margaret Han, CEO of Telefield Imaging Medical Limited.
Telefield’s Scolioscan system is a safe and hassle-free way to effectively monitor the early progression of scoliosis. According to a study, the primary onset age for scoliosis is 10 to 15 years old, and three million new cases are diagnosed every year in the U.S. Since the mechanism of scoliosis formation and progression is unknown, it is important to closely monitor its progression in children. Traditional effective diagnostic methods, like X-rays, expose children to cumulative radiation throughout screening, monitoring and treatment. This increases the risk of cancer in scoliosis patients by 4.8 times more than the normal population 25 years later, according to a study conducted in Denmark. The Scolioscan’s radiation-free assessment comes as a perfect alternative for frequent use among children.

Accurate diagnostic results form the next pillar of the Scolioscan system. Since scoliosis is a multifactorial, 3D spinal deformity, even an X-ray cannot provide complete information. The Scoliostudio software is used for 3D analysis of the images generated by Scolioscan. With the help of this 3D analysis software, a 3D spinal model and a complete spinal profile are created to observe and measure the deformity of the spine in coronal, sagittal, and transverse planes. This 3D information offers detailed insights into the deformity without any radiation and thus facilitates effective treatment.

“Many clinicians use our device as it provides visual monitoring before and after as well as during non-surgical treatment, enabling them to make necessary adjustments from an early stage. The clinical test results show that our ultrasound curve angles are highly consistent with the X-ray curvature measurement results, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.94,” says Professor Zheng Yong Ping, co-founder of Telefield Imaging Medical Limited.

The Scolioscan assessment system is globally acknowledged. It has obtained the CE, ARTG, and NMPA certificates and won important awards in many international innovation competitions. The system is widely used in hospitals and clinics in Europe, Australia, Mainland China and Hong Kong. For instance, it combines with the Schroth exercises to provide inpatient treatment of scoliosis and other spinal deformities in collaboration with Asklepios, a leading digital healthcare group in Germany. Currently under application for the FDA certification, Scolioscan is expected to enter the US market in the second half of next year.

Scolioscan is a global technological leader in radiation-free imaging solutions in the field of spinal assessment. Driven by innovation, it aims to provide patients worldwide with safe and efficient scoliosis assessment through continuous technological advancements.
