Google prioritizes child digital safety through collaborations, enhancements to existing tools, and new features, promoting well-being online.
FREMONT, CA: In today's digital age, the internet has become an integral part of the lives of millions of children and teens worldwide, offering opportunities for learning, connection, and growth that were previously unimaginable. However, as more young people embrace online platforms and new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) continue to emerge, concerns about their digital well-being and mental health have come to the forefront of public discourse.
The surge in searches related to "teen mental health" and queries about "parental controls," "screen time," and "AI for kids" underscores the growing awareness and importance of addressing these issues. Central to Google's approach is collaboration with experts in child development, online safety, and mental health to ensure that best practices inform all initiatives. As part of this commitment, Google.org is allocating $20 million to support organizations that promote digital well-being, mental health, and online safety for children. This funding will bolster efforts to create a safer and healthier online environment for young users worldwide.
One notable collaboration is with Highlights Magazine, a trusted resource for children for over 75 years. Google has partnered with Highlights to release a magazine special edition based on Google's Be Internet Awesome curriculum. This edition features engaging puzzles, crafts, and stories designed to help children navigate the online world safely and confidently. Additionally, Google is working with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to host interactive events at select clubs, providing children with hands-on learning experiences based on Be Internet Awesome resources.
Another essential partnership is with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street. Over the next year, Sesame Workshop will develop new videos and digital resources featuring beloved Sesame Street characters to promote digital well-being and help families implement healthy strategies for using digital media and AI. These resources strengthen emotional well-being and foster positive relationships within families and communities.
In addition to collaborations, Google enhances existing tools like Family Link to empower parents and caregivers to manage their children's online experiences. Family Link offers settings and tools to monitor screen time, guide children toward age-appropriate content, and manage app permissions. Google is also introducing new features to simplify parental controls, enable secure sharing of passwords among family members, and streamline SafeSearch settings to enhance online safety for children.
On YouTube, Google has implemented default features for teens focused on digital well-being, such as Take a Break and Bedtime reminders, designed to promote healthy screen habits. Furthermore, YouTube recommends potentially harmful content for teens. It supports initiatives like the World Health Organization (WHO) and the British Medical Journal (BMJ) report on appropriate mental health content for teens.
These efforts underscore Google's ongoing commitment to supporting children and families' digital well-being and safety online. By collaborating with experts, enhancing existing tools, and implementing new features, Google aims to empower children and parents to navigate the digital world confidently and responsibly.
