Microsoft Releases an Evaluation Tool for Oracle Database Migration
CIO Review APAC | Monday, October 17, 2022

The new tool evaluates the complexity of the database code and offers suggestions for database migration.
FREMONT, CA: Microsoft (MSFT: NASDAQ) introduced a database migration evaluation tool to make it easier for Oracle (ORCL: NYSE)users to switch to Azure Database for PostgreSQL. Powered by Azure Database Migration Service, the new service is now in preview mode and accessible as an Azure Data Studio plugin.
Microsoft claims the evaluation tool assesses the database's code complexity and recommends database migration. Customers can get target size recommendations from the same tool for moving their Oracle Database to Azure Database for PostgreSQL and Azure SQL. Also included in this is Azure SQL Database Hyperscale, which Microsoft claims is ideal for heavy workloads up to 100 TB.

Microsoft claims that these adjustments simplify migration planning for Oracle customers who want to migrate their data estate to Azure-managed databases. The new tool finds different migration destinations on Azure, recommends the best target, shows the ideal target size, and assesses the difficulty of the code needed to migrate to the PostgreSQL target.
The Azure Data Studio extension performs two distinct evaluations:
Workload Assessment: Workload assessment identifies the schema items quickly and categorises the schema based on how much complexity has to be moved. The necessary labor hours for remediation are estimated using this information. Users can develop a successful migration strategy by knowing which workloads or schemas are appropriate for conversion at the earliest possible time.
Code Assessment: The code assessment thoroughly examines the Oracle schema objects and provides advice on whether or not they are ready for migration as a whole. The object kinds are broken down into three subcategories on a more detailed level: Ready, Needs review, and Not ready. The program generates a more accurate estimate of the relevant conversion hours.
Before suggesting a suitable Azure PostgreSQL target, the addon, according to Microsoft, also analyses the Oracle server's performance system metadata by evaluating performance indicators like CPU, RAM, and IO, among others. Microsoft claims that moving Oracle Database to Azure is now easier than ever, with new assessment scenarios assisting clients in accelerating migrations while minimising risk.
An Oracle-managed service that Azure users can use to create, access, and administer Oracle Database services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with a familiar Azure-like experience was launched by Oracle and Microsoft earlier this year. Microsoft announced on Wednesday at its Ignite 2022 event that it is adding distributed PostgreSQL support to Azure Cosmos DB, its distributed database service powered by the Hyperscale (Citus) engine. The company also gives a sneak peek at support for R, a statistical language, inside its Synapse data warehouse.
