
APAC regions transport sector must contribute towards decarbonization

According to the International Transport Forum, traffic emissions will climb by 16 percent by 2050 compared to 2015
FREMONT, CA: The recently concluded United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021, or COP26, in Glasgow came to an agreement that rapid, profound, and long-term reductions in global greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO2, are required to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. The transportation sectors’ emission levels were called to be reduced as it was a cause of concern. Electric mobility, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and improving public transportation are just a few of the important transportation plans included in the region's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Even if existing promises to decarbonize transportation are completely fulfilled, according to the International Transport Forum, traffic emissions will climb by 16 percent by 2050 compared to 2015. The impact of electrifying urban transportation networks to reduce carbon emissions is highly dependent on the electricity source.

Electric vehicles (EVs) currently account for less than 5 percent of the worldwide vehicle fleet, and the transportation sector remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Electric vehicles must be widely adopted in order to achieve the necessary reductions in automobile emissions to satisfy climate targets. Several countries in the Asia-Pacific area are leading the way in this regard, with proactive policies that are preparing the way for the transition to electric mobility. China is putting in place a plan to encourage electric mobility, with over half a million electric buses already in service. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xi'an are three Chinese cities that have entirely electrified public transportation networks. Nepal has a lot of hydropower capacity and a lot of green energy that can be utilized to power electric vehicles. Both the public and private sectors have taken steps to make adoption simpler. Nepal, for example, has decreased import taxes on electric vehicles, and in Kathmandu, the private sector operates electric buses and mini busses. The government is acquiring 200 electric buses for use in Kathmandu's public transportation system, as well as 500 charging stations. There are also plans to spread the use of electric vehicles to other cities.
