From Insight to Impact: Orchestrating Data, AI and Digital Transformation in Retail Banking

Dominic Siu
In the evolving landscape of retail banking, digital transformation is no longer a choice—it’s a necessity. At Dah Sing Bank, our mission has been clear to harness the power of data and digital to create meaningful value for customers while driving operational excellence.
This journey has taught us that digital, data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) are not standalone initiatives. They are interdependent forces that, when aligned, unlock transformative potential.
Embedding Intelligence into Customer Journey
A pivotal moment in our transformation was the development of a “Next Best Action” solution, leveraging machine learning to deliver personalized product recommendations within our mobile banking app. By integrating over 150 data sources—ranging from transaction patterns, customer behaviour analytics to external market data—we translate insights into actionable, contextual suggestions. This approach doesn’t just improve engagement, it drives 500 percent uplift in conversion rates and earned recognition, including the HKICT Awards’ FinTech accolade and Asian Banker’s Best Personalization Initiative.
The success of this initiative underscored a critical lesson that analytics must transcend dashboards. By embedding intelligence into customer touchpoints, we ensured that insights translated into real-time value—whether through tailored offers, proactive alerts, or seamless service. This philosophy will be extended to channels like contact centres and branches, creating a unified, customer-centric experience.
Agentic AI Transforming Engagement at Scale
Agentic AI has further amplified our ability to engage customers meaningfully. We deployed AI agents to power market insight generation, enabling more frequent, personalized and contextual content delivery. These agents actively conduct web searches, generate content aligned with compliance and branding guidelines, creating supporting visual assets and validate outputs through secondary AI checks before distributing the content via push notifications and email.
This approach allows us to translate time-sensitive market events, economic trends and product information into narratives tailored to different customer segments at speed and scale. For instance, a market trend might be framed as a strategic opportunity for an FX investor or a practical tip for a retail customer. This dual focus on what and how we communicate has not only enhanced relevance but also reduced operational overhead.
Navigating Challenges through the Power of Experimentation
When GenAI emerged, excitement was tempered by uncertainty. Rather than waiting for perfection, we partnered with a technology firm to run a focused proof of concept (POC). Through iterative testing and weekly refinements, we not only validated the use cases but also gained a clear understanding of what this emerging technology could and could not do.
We completed the POC in just four weeks and moved on to implementation. This structured experimentation approach became a blueprint for adopting emerging technologies, proving that agility and collaboration drive progress.
Digital Strategy Tailored for Every Customer
Our digital approach is equally adaptive, addressing the unique needs of different customer segments:
Relationship Manager (RM)-assisted segments (e.g., VIP Banking): Digital tools augment human expertise, providing RMs with real-time insights to deepen relationships and enable proactive advisory conversations.
RM-light or RM-less segments (e.g., YOU Banking, SME banking): Here, digital becomes the primary interface, guided by AI to offer self-service solutions. From contextual prompts to intelligent recommendations, customers gain autonomy while benefiting from data-driven guidance.
Integrating Data, Digital and AI for Future Banking
Underpinning these initiatives is our decision to integrate data and digital into a single, cohesive team. Data acts as the “brain,” transforming raw information into actionable intelligence, while digital serves as the “hands”, delivering insights across customer interactions at scale. This model eliminates silos, accelerates execution and fosters cross-functional collaboration—key to sustaining innovation.
As AI, data and digital continue to change customer expectations, the banks that thrive will be those that consistently translate insight into impact. At Dah Sing Bank, we remain committed to leveraging technology not as an end in itself but as a means to create more relevant, connected and human-centric experiences.
